Aspen Philippines Wins Asia CEO Awards

Pharmaceuticals have been closely linked to the quality of life of many people. All over the world, doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals aim to look for medicines that help in treating their patients, medicines that are affordable yet of good quality and, most importantly, medicines that work. It is with this goal in mind that Aspen Pharmacare Holdings Ltd established its first Asian subsidiary in the Philippines.

Aspen Philippines, Inc. has just been nominated at the Asia CEO Awards for the Innovative Company award. The Asia CEO Awards recognize extraordinary leaders and their teams who have demonstrated outstanding achievement for their organizations and contributions to others. The annual gala was established as an outgrowth of Asia CEO Forum, the largest regular networking event for the business community in the Philippines. Asia CEO Awards, presented by PLDT Alpha Enterprise, represents a wide reaching alliance of local and international business people to promote the Philippines on the world stage. As one of the largest events of its kind in the Asia Pacific region, it is considered a must-attend occasion for business leaders active in Southeast Asia.

This honorable body bestows 10 awards to some of the most accomplished leadership teams and individuals currently operating in the Philippines and the region. The awards recognize extraordinary leaders who have demonstrated outstanding achievement for their organizations and contributions to others.

Present in over 150 countries, Aspen is known for manufacturing products with high quality, efficacy, and affordability. It is the ninth largest generic company in the world and Africa’s largest pharmaceutical manufacturer. Choosing the Philippines as its business launching pad in Asia shows how Aspen Pharma absolutely believes in the country as an emerging pharmaceutical market, providing vast opportunities for growth and added revenue to its worldwide operations. According to the latest Philippines Pharmaceutical

Market Update, the country’s almost 7% in 2013 was one of the fastest GDP growth rates in Asia, making it a prime location for business development.

Aspen Philippines has been operating in the Philippines for almost three years. Marcelina Itchon was placed at the helm of a fledgling company, seemingly green among the big multinational companies already settled in the country. Building from the ground up and establishing a strong management team has made the company grow tremendously. The carefully-selected management group set up a robust company that was built from the collective experience of its team. “Being chosen to develop Aspen Philippines has been a personal honor, privilege, and an enormous responsibility,” Itchon says.

Aspen Philippines took an innovative approach in doing business by reinvigorating heritage brands and locally acquired other mature brands from GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and Merck, Sharp, and Dohme (MSD) just before starting operations. It also partnered with multi-national companies of which the scope was never before seen.

In less than three years, Itchon and her team had improved the numbers that make good companies: increased staff from one to 150; increased number of drug brands from 12 to 37; increased sales from 67M to 1.2B pesos; enlarged office space from 8 sq m to 530 sq m; and added business partners from none to three. Moreover, the leading pharmaceutical market research and data analytics company IMS Health ranks Aspen as the 30th best pharmaceutical company, up from being an unranked company just before September 2012.

It is worthy to note that Aspen Philippines, Inc., which was the new kid on the block just a couple of years ago, is now considered by doctors to be a trailblazer in the pharmaceutical industry. One of the reasons is its innovative program called MedQuiz, which partners with medical professionals for continuous medical education. MedQuiz is a contest whereby a doctor mentors a group of Aspen’s medical representatives to hone their detailing skills. After three months of coaching, the Aspen representatives compete in one event on disease and product knowledge, with the objective of elevating the competency of the field force.

Aspen has also initiated numerous innovative programs to drive its Sale Force Effectiveness (SFE) system. For instance, Aspen Business Intelligence is a daily sales and performance monitoring system. Another one is the Aspen Automated Call System, in which representatives’ visits are reported through Android-based apps with daily updates.

All these are getting the attention of businesses around the world.

Aspen Philippines, Inc. shows its strength in many ways, and it takes great pride in the results it has achieved in such a short time. You can be sure that Aspen will not stop improving, as global CEO Steve Saad has said, “To rest is to rust.” With eyes firmly fixed on the future, and with hands widely embracing its goal of providing quality medicines and making them affordable to every Filipino, Aspen Philippines takes its place in the pharmaceutical landscape where it will continue to be held in high regard.
